Delegate Mark N. Fisher would like to extend an internship opportunity to high school and college aged students in Calvert County. The internship would take place during the upcoming 2018 Legislative Session in Annapolis. The legislative session lasts from January 10th until April 9th (90 days). We are seeking students who are interested in the political process and wish to gain invaluable first-hand experience as to how state government operates. The schedule is incredibly flexible. Understanding our interns are attending school while participating in this internship, we allow the interns to adjust their schedule as needed. Typically, our interns work 1-2 days a week. The hours vary based on their class schedules, some work half days, some work full days, and some only put in a few hours when they can. This opportunity is excellent for individuals who may have an early release schedule and can travel to and from Annapolis. The type of work assigned to interns is mainly legislative, although some duties are clerical in nature. Legislative responsibilities may include: conducting research; drafting correspondence; preparing, recording, and reporting testimony; contacting witnesses; attending committee hearings; tracking bills; working on mailings; responding to constituents' inquiries; and, writing newsletters. Mark and I also like to give the interns opportunities to get involved in the legislative process. Each intern will have the opportunity to present oral testimony in support of legislation before House and Senate Committees if they so choose to (this is not required). Like with all things in life, you will get out what you put into this internship. This is a volunteer only internship and will thus be unpaid. Please have all interested individuals send us a resume via email at: [email protected]. The deadline for applications to be submitted is Monday, December 18th, 2017.
